In the face of unprecedented global uncertainty, Jonathan Johnson stood tall as Island Governor of Saba, safely steering (guiding) this relatively small community through the COVID-19 pandemic with unwavering resolve and compassion. Throughout his career he has safely managed crisis in the past. However, managing a hurricane, sea rescue or a mission to rescue a visitor lost in Mount Scenery, paled in comparison to a pandemic.
With swift action, clear communication, and a commitment to protecting the vulnerable, Governor Johnson helped the Saban community navigate this global crisis with remarkable success. The results speak for themselves: fewer than 10 lives were lost, a testament to the Governor’s leadership and the community’s resilience.
Through it all, Governor Johnson prioritized transparency, keeping citizens informed and engaged every step of the way. Fulfilling his role as ‘Burgervader’ and bridgebuilder he and his team fostered a united front against the pandemic through collaboration with the Dutch RIVM, Island Governor of Bonaire, Government Commissioner of Sint Eustatius, local health officials, businesses and residents.
Remarkably, under Governor Johnson’s leadership, Saba became the first island in the Dutch Caribbean, the sub-region and the Western Hemisphere to achieve approximately 95% vaccination coverage, a testament of his sound vision and the community’s trust.
Let us as a Dutch Kingdom celebrate Governor Johnson’s exemplary leadership, which safeguarded the well-being of his island and all its residents and inspired hope in uncertain times. His work is a shining example of effective governance and community spirit. After serving his community in the capacity of Island Governor these past 18 years, it is only fitting that he is recognized and celebrated for his invaluable contributions.
